I played halfback/safety on Babylon High School's first ever League Championship Team in the fall of 1960.Head Coach was Bob Cox, assisted by Marty Albert and Tony "Red" Mattel.

We won the League III championship with a 5-1 league record. (5-3 overall). After losing our first two games (Southampton and Smithtown) in what was considered to be an "off" and rebuilding year, the team suddenly jelled in a 21-0 win over Riverhead. That was the the first of 5 straight winsover Riverhead, Harborfields, Central Islip, Newfield and Hauppauge before a toughfinal-game loss to West Babylon, 7-6. But we were the Champs of League III!

There were only 4 Leagues in Suffolk County in those days with about 7 teams per league - and only 11 players made 1st team All-County!

It was the second year that Babylon played in a regular league after re-starting its football program and winning the Novice League Championship in 1958/1959. That undefeated Novice League Championship team was inducted into the Babylon "Wall of Fame" in 2002.

Our 1959-60 team, which played in League II, ended with a 3-4-1 record against some great teams, including Northport (15-13 L), Bay Shore (7-6 L), Sayville (W), Patchogue (T), West Babylon (W), Riverhead (L), Southampton (W)and Amityville (L). The record belies the fact that this was a most talented team that tried to make a huge leap from Novice League to League II. Each ofour opponents in 1959(especially Amityville)knew that they were in a game because, even then, "Babylon Hit." It was the team that brought football back to Babylon High after the program ended in about 1954 or 1955.

In 1960/61, we had only a few Seniors on what was a Junior and Sophomore- dominated team. It was the first ofseveral championship teamsunder Coach Cox - and the start of the winning tradition that Babylon's players and residents are so very proud of today.

For the last ten years , I have attended most of Babylon's games and I still get just as excited over the wins and chanpionships as I did in 1960 - Babylon's first Championship.
